Winix 5510 Review: Louder Than the Model It Replaces
It clears a room a minute slower than the discontinued 5500-2 and does it at 67.2 dBA against 59.8. The carbon layer is also no longer washable.

The cleaning is excellent and the app is a genuine addition, but this is a smaller body doing the same job as the 5500-2 and it is noticeably louder for it. Run it on speed two and turn off the light sensor if you want it working overnight.

The successor problem
The Winix 5500-2 was, for years, the value recommendation in air purifiers. This replaces it.
House Fresh tested both in the same room with the same equipment. The 5500-2 cleared it in 23 minutes at 59.8 dBA. The 5510 takes 24 minutes at 67.2 dBA.
One minute slower, and roughly twice as loud in perceived terms.
The cause is not a worse fan; it is a smaller box. House Fresh names it directly: the 5510 does the same job in a much more compact body with smaller filters, which means the fan has to work harder to move the same air.
Clean Air Adviser adds the other regression: the 5500-2's carbon layer was washable, and this one is not.
What it does better
Certified CADR of 253 CFM for smoke against the 5500-2's 232, covering 392 square feet against 360.
WiFi and app control, which the older model had none of.
And it is a current product with a supply chain behind it, where the 5500-2 was discontinued in May 2025.
TechGearLab's smoke testing shows the cleaning is genuinely strong: 82 percent of large ash particles and 76 percent of fine soot trapped inside ten minutes, reaching 99 percent by 32 minutes in a 200 square foot space. They ranked it third of twelve.
Speed two is where it lives
House Fresh's speed-by-speed measurements make the case.
Sleep 35.2 dBA. Speed one 36.8. Speed two 40.8. Speed three 51.6. Top speed 67.2.
At speed two it still moves an estimated 125 CFM while drawing 6.6 watts. That is quiet enough to sleep beside and cheap enough to leave on permanently.
The top speed is for the twenty minutes after something burns.
The light sensor is a mistake
In auto mode, the 5510 detects darkness and drops itself to sleep.
Clean Air Adviser lists this among recurring owner complaints, and the logic is hard to defend: the machine reduces its airflow for exactly the eight hours you are lying in the room breathing.
The fix is to run it on a fixed manual speed rather than auto, which also avoids the odour sensor that owners report responding inconsistently to visible smoke and dust.
The running cost is the filter
House Fresh: about $141 a year, of which $61 is electricity at continuous maximum and about $80 is the annual Filter Q set.
TechGearLab: about $109 a year, and roughly $1,268 across ten years, which they describe as expensive upkeep.
The electricity part is negligible at the speeds you will actually use. The filter is the number, and with no washable carbon layer there is no way to stretch it.
One more practical note from Clean Air Adviser: Filter Q is not compatible with the 5500-2's Filter A, so an upgrade means starting a new stock of spares.
How it scored
The overall 7.5 is the weighted average of these five criteria — we never adjust it by hand.

Value
Clean Air Adviser scored it 8.6 out of 10 and TechGearLab 72 out of 100, with TechGearLab putting annual running cost at $109 and calling upkeep expensive.
Build quality
Three-stage filtration with 226 grams of pelleted carbon, though Clean Air Adviser notes that carbon layer is no longer washable as it was on the 5500-2.
Ease of use
WiFi and app control, but Clean Air Adviser reports the light sensor dropping it to sleep mode in a dark room during auto, which undermines overnight cleaning.
Noise
House Fresh measured 67.2 dBA at top speed against 59.8 for the 5500-2. TechGearLab scored noise 6.1 out of 10.

Clean Air Adviser supplies the certified CADR figures, the filter construction and compatibility detail, the ozone certification and the collected owner complaints including the light sensor behaviour, and scored it 8.6 out of 10.
