That is backwards for a portable SSD and it has one real consequence. Dumping cards onto it is quick; playing large video back off it is the slower direction.

The asymmetry nobody advertises

Portable SSDs are normally quoted as read-then-write, and reads are normally the faster of the two. This one is the other way round.

Shutter Muse measured writes peaking around 1,100 MB/s, comfortably above Samsung's own 1,000 MB/s claim, and reads on the same drive running 835 MB/s for small transfers and dropping to roughly 650 MB/s on large ones.

The consequence is specific rather than general. Filling the drive is fast, which covers the main reason people buy one of these: getting a day of camera cards copied before dinner. Getting large files back off it is the slower direction, and Shutter Muse names 8K video playback as the case where that matters.

The ruggedness is not a sticker

IP65 and a three metre drop rating are the published figures. TechGearLab tested the second one properly, dropping the drive from 9.8 feet onto a hard surface, and it carried on working. They also confirmed it survived water testing.

The construction is an aluminium body inside a rubber shell, which StorageReview describes as built for rough handling and which is the entire difference between this and the standard T7.

You pay for it in weight. TechGearLab lists that among the drawbacks, and it is a fair complaint for anyone who never leaves a desk.

What the benchmarks are and are not telling you

Three sets of numbers, all correct, all measuring different things.

Synthetic sequential benchmarks reach past 1,000 MB/s. TechGearLab got 1,061 MB/s sequential read on Windows, and StorageReview's four-thread IOMeter runs landed around 1,041 MB/s.

Blackmagic, which simulates video work, gave StorageReview 914 MB/s read and 939 MB/s write.

Actual drag-and-drop of files, which is what most people will do, gave TechGearLab 583 MB/s on a Mac and 236 MB/s on Windows. That gap is large enough to be worth knowing about before you assume the platform makes no difference.

Where it holds up

Shutter Muse deliberately tested the case everyone worries about, filling the drive to 75 percent and measuring again. Performance stayed relatively stable, and they explicitly note this contradicts other reviewers who reported severe slowdowns.

StorageReview raises no throttling or sustained-performance concerns either.

Large files do settle lower than the peak, around 800 MB/s writing, but that is normal behaviour rather than a fault.

The competition, briefly

Shutter Muse's own conclusion is that the Crucial X9 Pro is marginally faster for similar money, and that this remains the drive to buy if the work involves travel, because there is no reason not to choose a rugged one.

That is the honest summary. On raw speed this is competitive rather than dominant. On surviving a bag, a building site or a beach, it is one of the few options where the rating has been independently tested rather than repeated from a spec sheet.

StorageReview supplies the Blackmagic and IOMeter benchmark numbers, the physical dimensions and weight, and the encryption specification. Shutter Muse is the only source to test large files and near-full capacity, and is where the read-versus-write asymmetry and the sustained figures come from. The three disagree on weight, since Shutter Muse quotes 7.44 oz against StorageReview's 98 g; the lower figure matches Samsung's own specification and is the one used here.

Does it slow down as it fills up?
Less than reputation suggests. Shutter Muse specifically tested at 75 percent capacity and found performance relatively stable, explicitly contradicting other reviewers who reported significant slowdowns. StorageReview mentions no throttling or sustained performance concerns either. That said, both were testing large sequential transfers rather than a drive kept permanently near full, which is a harder case for any SSD.
Is it worth paying more than the standard T7?
Only if the drive leaves a desk. StorageReview is blunt that this is a solid continuation of the line rather than a major leap, and the performance difference against the plain T7 is not the point. What you are buying is the rubber shell, the IP65 rating and the drop tolerance. Shutter Muse puts it well for field use, arguing there is no reason not to choose a rugged drive when the work involves travel. For a drive that lives beside a computer, the extra bulk buys you nothing.
