Gain is handled by the operating system and there is no high-pass filter at all. In exchange you plug it in and it works, with no drivers and nothing to configure.

Three things that are not on it

No gain knob. MusicRadar reports microphone level is set by the operating system, so adjusting it means opening sound settings rather than turning a dial.

No low-cut filter. MusicRadar wanted one and says so plainly.

No drivers. Podcast.co confirms it is class compliant and works the instant you plug it in.

The third one is why the first two are forgivable. This is a microphone designed so that the distance between unboxing it and having a recording is a single cable, and Rode has removed everything that might sit in the way, including some things you would rather it kept.

The missing filter is the real problem

MusicRadar reports it picks up considerable tabletop rumble.

That is precisely what a high-pass filter removes, and there is not one. On a small microphone sitting on the same desk as your keyboard, your elbows and whatever you put down while talking, that shows up.

The magnetic stand detaches from a 360 degree mount with a standard thread, so a boom arm or a shock mount is the answer. Budget for one if your desk is lively.

The pop filter, by contrast, works

MusicRadar calls the filter built into the head grille surprisingly effective, while being honest that it does not catch every plosive. Podcast.co says it dampens room reverberation as well.

Worth comparing against the Rode PodMic elsewhere in this catalogue, where three separate sources found the internal filter gives up at close distances. The smaller, cheaper microphone does this better.

What it sounds like

That is the trade. A PodMic makes you sound like radio and needs an interface, a preamp and a boom. This makes you sound like yourself and needs a USB port.
