Keychron Q1 Review: Two Reviewers, Opposite Opinions on the Sound

A 1.7kg CNC aluminium case with a plate that floats 2.5mm. One reviewer loved the resonance it produces and another called the case ping its main flaw.

The disagreement is the review

Nextrift and Inverse both spent real time with this keyboard and reached opposite conclusions about the single most subjective thing a keyboard does.

Nextrift calls the sound profile its primary weakness. Case ping, worst on the edge keys, an unpleasant metallic tone that persisted even after they installed every gasket strip in the box.

Inverse says there is a resonance to the typing sound that they love.

They are describing the same physics. A machined aluminium case is a resonant chamber, and gasket mounting reduces how much of that reaches you without eliminating it. Whether the remainder reads as richness or as ringing is a matter of ear, and neither reviewer is wrong.

What you should take from it: if there is any way to hear one before buying, take it, because this is the aspect of the board most likely to decide whether you keep it.

What the money buys

CNC-machined aluminium at about 1.7kg. Inverse describes the body as sturdy enough to survive almost anything and offers no criticism of the build at all, which is rare.

Underneath, the plate is suspended on Poron gaskets rather than bolted to the case, and Inverse measured it floating up to 2.5mm. That is the feature. Bottoming out a key lands on something that gives slightly instead of on metal, and over a long working day the difference is real rather than theoretical.

The stabilisers arrive screwed in and lubed, which Nextrift rates as quite good while noting they develop a slight tick over time. On a prebuilt keyboard that is still ahead of most of the field, where stabiliser rattle is usually the first thing an owner fixes.

The switches are ordinary, which is a feature

It ships with pre-lubed Gateron Phantoms in linear, tactile or clicky, and the sockets take both 3-pin and 5-pin MX switches.

That is worth saying next to the K2 HE we have also covered, which is locked to one family of magnetic switches. Here you can put in whatever you like, forever, and the usual escape hatch of a mechanical keyboard stays open.

What it will not do

It does not go wireless. MKB Guide is clear that standard Q1 models are wired USB-C only and that wireless means buying a Q1 Pro or Q1 Max, and the shared name across those variants is the easiest mistake to make when ordering.

It does not travel. At 1.7kg this is a thing that sits on a desk.

And the assembled model ships with double-shot ABS keycaps, which will develop a shine on the most-used keys eventually. PBT sets exist and Inverse notes they are sold separately.

Who it is actually for

The Q1 exists because custom keyboards were, for years, a hobby you had to enter by buying a case, a plate, a PCB, switches, stabilisers and keycaps separately and assembling them.

This is that keyboard, assembled, with QMK and VIA already on it. Nextrift calls it very good value with significant modding potential. Inverse frames it as one-size-fits-most for newcomers and enthusiasts alike.

Both of those are ways of saying the same thing: you can buy it and use it, or buy it and start taking it apart, and it is good at either.

Inverse supplies the plate flex measurement, the switch compatibility and the positive read on the sound. Nextrift covers the stabilisers, the keycaps and the case ping complaint, and is the source that disagrees. MKB Guide supplies the layout, key count, dimensions and weight, and clarifies which Q series variants are wired against wireless, which matters because the range shares model names. We have not resolved the sound disagreement because it is a question of taste about a real acoustic property, not a factual dispute.

Is it wireless?
The standard Q1 is not. MKB Guide is explicit that standard models are wired USB-C only and that wireless requires the Q1 Pro or Q1 Max. Inverse confirms USB-C wired only on the model they reviewed. This matters because the Q series has grown a lot of variants that share a name and differ on exactly this point.
What does gasket mounting actually do?
It suspends the plate on soft strips instead of screwing it hard to the case, so the whole typing surface has a little give. Inverse measured that give at up to 2.5mm and describes it as the thing that makes the board feel expensive. The practical effect is that bottoming out feels cushioned rather than hitting metal, which is easier on the fingers over a long day.
Can I put my own switches in it?
Yes, and unlike the hall effect boards this accepts ordinary switches. Inverse confirms hot-swap sockets taking both 3-pin and 5-pin MX switches, and MKB Guide describes Kailh hot-swap sockets. It ships with pre-lubed Gateron Phantoms in linear, tactile or clicky. This is the main practical advantage over the K2 HE, which is locked to one magnetic switch family.
Is QMK hard to use?
You do not have to touch it. The board supports QMK, which is powerful and involves flashing firmware, but also VIA, which is a browser interface where you click a key and choose what it should do. Nextrift and Inverse both point at VIA as the route for people who want remapping without the technical overhead.
