Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Review: Every Part Replaceable, Including the Driver

One reviewer calls the frequency response impressively flat. Two others measured a V shape with a treble peak they recommend cutting by 5dB. The cable is soldered in either way.

The disagreement about the treble

TechGearLab describes an impressively flat frequency response, with every instrument getting clear articulation whether it sits in the bass, mid or treble.

SoundGuys measured a very strong emphasis in the highest frequencies and recommends cutting everything above 6kHz by about 5dB to stop it becoming fatiguing.

AmperHeads describes a pronounced V shape with an elevated 8 to 10kHz region that causes listening fatigue on bright recordings, and suggests a notch at 9kHz.

Two of the three specify frequencies and correction amounts. One offers an impression. There is also a variant difference: TechGearLab tested a 32 ohm version while the others tested the 80 ohm, and impedance variants of this headphone are voiced slightly differently.

The safest reading is that these are not neutral, that the treble is the part people notice, and that an equaliser fixes it in ten seconds.

What makes it a twenty-year headphone

AmperHeads lists what Beyerdynamic will sell you as a spare part: velour ear pads, headband cushion, cable assembly, and the driver itself.

That last one is unusual to the point of being almost unique at this price. A driver is the thing that eventually fails, and on nearly every other headphone its failure is the end of the product. Here it is a component.

AmperHeads' consequence is that units from fifteen years ago remain in professional use. That is not nostalgia, it is a maintenance model.

The one part you cannot replace

The cable. AmperHeads describes it as soldered to the driver assembly, and SoundGuys measures it at three metres, coiled, with a threaded quarter-inch adapter.

On a headphone whose entire appeal is that everything is serviceable, having the single most failure-prone component permanently attached is a genuinely odd decision. SoundGuys' practical warning is that its relative fragility makes these unsuitable for commuting, which combined with the length is fair.

Comfort, with one caveat

SoundGuys scored comfort 9.0 at 249 grams and says you can wear them for hours without anything feeling off. The velour pads are the reason: they breathe rather than trapping heat, and glasses wearers prefer them because they do not squeak or catch.

AmperHeads raises the exception. The ear cup depth is shallow, so listeners with larger ears may find the driver touching. TechGearLab separately found the headband created noticeable pressure over extended wear.

Where they belong

Closed back means they do not leak, which is why they have lived in tracking booths for decades: a singer can wear them next to a microphone without the click track ending up on the recording.

The V-shaped tuning that disqualifies them for mixing is the same tuning that makes them good for gaming and for electronic music, which AmperHeads names directly. Bass impact and crisp cymbals are a feature everywhere except the one job the name implies.

Our sources disagree, and the majority say no. TechGearLab describes an impressively flat frequency response with clear articulation across bass, mid and treble. AmperHeads independently describes a pronounced V shape with elevated bass, recessed midrange and an 8 to 10kHz peak, and states plainly that it is unsuitable for critical mixing. Two measurements against one impression, so treat this as a listening headphone that is excellent at tracking rather than a reference monitor.
Which impedance should I buy?
The 80 ohm for almost everyone. SoundGuys states you do not need an amplifier to use the 80 ohm version with typical devices, and AmperHeads says the same while noting the 250 ohm needs a dedicated desktop amp and offers marginally tighter bass in return. TechGearLab tested a 32 ohm variant, which is a third option aimed at portable use. Match the version to whether you have an amplifier, not to which number sounds more serious.
How well does it block noise?
Adequately for a studio, poorly for a commute. AmperHeads puts passive attenuation at about 25 dB. SoundGuys scored isolation 4.0 out of 10 and notes it blocks mostly sound higher pitched than middle C. TechGearLab describes it as relatively little. There is no active cancelling, so low frequencies pass through largely untouched, which is why these are for a quiet room rather than an aeroplane.
Can I replace the cable?
No, and it is the one genuine design failure. AmperHeads describes the coiled cable as soldered to the driver assembly, committing you to it for the life of the headphone, and contrasts that with competitors offering detachable systems. SoundGuys measures it at three metres and warns its relative fragility makes the headphones unsuitable for commuting. Everything else on this headphone can be replaced, which makes the exception stranger.
Why do people still buy a design this old?
Because of the parts programme. AmperHeads lists pads, headband cushion, cable assembly and even the driver as user-replaceable through Beyerdynamic, and points out that units from fifteen years ago remain in professional use as a result. Most headphones become landfill when a pad perishes or a driver fails. These do not, and that is the strongest argument for them.
